Grandmother March Day!

It’s Grandmother March Day in Bulgaria!

On March 1st, Bulgaria bursts into red and white as the country celebrates Baba Marta — Grandmother March Day.

From the moment we step outside, something magical happens. Almost everyone we meet presses a small red-and-white token into our hands with a smile and a heartfelt wish for health and happiness. These charming little gifts are called Martenitsa (plural: Martenitsi).

They might be simple woven bracelets, or tiny paired dolls known as Pizho and Penda — one dressed in white, the other in red. We pin them to our coats or tie them around our wrists, instantly becoming part of the celebration.

👵 Who Is Grandmother March?

At the heart of the tradition is Baba Marta herself — a mythical, slightly temperamental old lady who chases away winter and invites spring to return.

Legend says she must be kept in good spirits. If she’s happy, the sun shines and spring arrives early. If not… well, let’s just say she might send a few more chilly days our way!

Wearing Martenitsi is one way of honouring her and welcoming the new season with optimism and goodwill.

🕊️ When Does the Celebration End?

So how long do people celebrate?

Bulgarians wear their Martenitsi until they spot the first stork or see a tree in blossom — both joyful signs that spring has truly arrived. Then comes another lovely ritual: the Martenitsa is tied to a blossoming tree branch.

At our campsite, many trees are already decorated with fluttering red-and-white threads. According to tradition, this brings health and good fortune — not just to the people, but to the tree itself.

We’re told it’s especially good news for the plum trees. A tree adorned with Martenitsi is destined for a plentiful harvest. Great news for the campsite… and for anyone hoping for homemade plum jam (or something a little stronger!).

Bulgaria in Spring: A Season of Celebrations

March is a festive month in Bulgaria.

And later in the spring, Bulgarians proudly celebrate their language and culture, honouring the beautiful Cyrillic script — one of the oldest and most influential alphabets in Europe.

If you’re visiting Bulgaria at this time of year, don’t be surprised if someone stops you to tie a red-and-white bracelet around your wrist. Accept it with a smile — you’re being wished health, happiness, and a bright spring ahead. 🌷
