The Day of Culture and Literacy
May 24 is the Day of Culture and Literacy. People also celebrate the Bulgarian alphabet – Many believe this is the most beautiful Bulgarian national holiday. In celebration of the letters honouring Saints Cyril and Methodius – creators of the Cyrillic alphabet. We are mixed about whether to celebrate the alphabet. It took us a long time to learn it!
This celebration is sometimes call The Feast of the letters and is a special date for all Bulgarians. Wherever he is, every Bulgarian enjoys happy memories of former celebrations on this day in May. Students celebrate this holiday very effectively. Often they go away for the night and party in a house in the country.

May 24 is a holiday to celebrate literacy, education and culture. It is also a celebration of spiritual upliftment, of striving for improvement through science and culture. Cyril and Methodius created important letters that make up important religious books. Their aim was to protect the right of every Bulgarian to glorify God in their own language. They are of historic significance not only for the formation of the Bulgarian nation and its prosperity.
Bulgarian language was the first Slavic language to have a written form, developed during the 9th century in the First Bulgarian Empire. Saints Cyril and Methodius were missionaries from Byzantium. It is a source of great pride in Bulgaria.
Fun Fact
Did you know that Bulgaria is the only European nation that will have a different name for the Euro. As the Cyrillic alphabet does not contact a letter u, the Bulgarian Euro will be called the Evro.
