On March 3rd, Bulgaria pauses to honour one of the most powerful moments in its history. It marks the restoration of its freedom after nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule.
This national holiday marks the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano on March 3, 1878. This ended the Russo-Turkish War. It was signed in the village of San Stefano (near Istanbul). The agreement re-established Bulgaria as a sovereign state and set the foundation for the modern nation.
A Day of Remembrance and Pride
Liberation Day was first celebrated in 1880, and by 1888 it was officially declared Bulgaria’s Day of Liberation. Since then, March 3rd has remained a symbol of resilience, sacrifice and national pride.
Across the country, towns and cities hold solemn ceremonies, cultural programmes and parades. Today we commemorate key battles, connecting the present with the courage of the past.
During official ceremonies, we read out the names of those who gave their lives for independence — It is a moving tribute to remind everyone of the human cost of freedom. We lay wreaths and flowers at memorials, and as evening falls, fireworks light up the sky in celebration.
Shipka – A Place of Honour
One of the most iconic locations for March 3rd commemorations is the Shipka Monument, standing proudly in the Balkan Mountains.
Here, officials and visitors gather to pay their respects to the soldiers who fought bravely in the decisive battles of the war. The atmosphere is powerful — patriotic songs, Bulgarian flags waving in the mountain air, and a shared sense of gratitude.
In the capital, we hold ceremonies at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, where we raise the Bulgarian flag and national leaders honour the fallen.
A Living History
Liberation Day is more than a date in a history book. It is a living reminder of Bulgaria’s journey — of endurance, unity and national identity.
Whether through formal ceremonies, quiet reflection, or gathering with family and friends, Bulgarians mark this day with deep respect and heartfelt pride.
May Bulgaria continue to be strong, proud and free.
To all our friends and customers celebrating today — честит празник! We wish you a very happy holiday.
And March is far from over… we’re looking forward to International Women’s Day, and of course we’re enjoying the beloved traditions of Baba Marta, which bring colour and charm to the start of spring.
