Tsaravets Castle, Veliko Tarnovo
Tsaravets Castle is a great place to visit. The views from the top are breathtaking and it is definitely worth the hike up. If you are lucky the lift will be open to take you to the top of the tower for an even higher view.
The original inhabiants built Tsaravets on a hill. It was the main fortification during medieval times when Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of Bulgaria. People have lived on the hill since the 2nd millennium B.C. However, its current thick stone fortified walls and guard towers date from the medieval age of the 12th Century.
It is well worth a visit to admire the views of the river Yantra and rocky outcrops of Arbanassi and to experience the centre of Bulgarian history across the ages. Particularly interesting are the Baldwin Tower, Execution Tower and the Escalator and viewing tower behind the church at the summit.

After you have visited the church, let us know what you think about the frescoes. Can you think why they are in this style? Ask us in reception and we will explain a little more about it if you didn’t read about it during your excursion.
